Pune Highways
There are primarily four main roads connecting Pune to other parts of the country:
- Pune Mumbai Expressway, a six lane highway, is used by the state and privates bus operators, cab service providers and personal vehicle commuters to travel to and fro between Pune and Mumbai.
- National Highway 4 (NH4), the Golden Quadrilateral highway, bypasses through Pune to connect it to Mumbai, Chennai, and Bangalore. NH4 also links Pune to other cities of Maharashtra such as Kolhapur, Satara and Kagal.
- National Highway 9 (NH9) connects Pune to Vijaywada and other cities of Andhra Pradesh state via few cities of Karnataka.
- National Highway 50 (NH50) links Pune and Nasik.
Pune Bus Services
There are three types of bus services available in Pune:
- City Bus Service to travel locally within Pune
- State Bus Service to travel outside Pune
- Private Bus Service to travel outside Pune
Pune City Bus Service
Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML) is the local bus service provider in the main Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad and other surrounding areas. Earlier known as Pune Municipal Transport, the main headquarter of PMPML is at Swargate. Currently it operates 1000 buses which travel across more than 350 routes. The bus fare ranges from anywhere between Rs 5 to Rs 25, depending on the distance travelled.

Pune State Bus Service
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) was established by the Government of Maharashtra to address the bus transport needs of its citizens travelling within Maharashtra and to other states. It not only carries passengers but also facilitates the movement of medicine distribution, postal mails and newspapers. With a fleet of more than 15,000 buses, MSRTC operates from 570 bus stops across various cities of Maharashtra.
The Volvo buses under the name of Shivneri are the most frequented buses for travelling between Pune and Mumbai. These buses run every 15-30 minutes, from morning 5:30 am till midnight. Though there are many private bus operators on the same route, it is advisable to take state buses because of cheaper fares, fewer stops and lesser travel time.

Pune Private Bus Service
Apart from MSRTC, there are many private operators which run their own Volvo buses between Pune, rest of Maharashtra and other states of India.
These operators have their own offices in various areas of the city to help the travelers with inquiry and booking. However, many of them have also started offering online booking facilities either through their own company websites or third party bus booking sites like www.redbus.in. www.makemytrip.com and www.travelyaari.com. Their offices usually act as the pickup and drop points for the passengers. However, it is not uncommon for them to operate from MSRTC bus stands, for which they often get fined by Regional Transport Authority (RTO) of Pune.
The fares of the buses run by private operators are comparatively higher than MSRTC. Also they may delay the journey start time to operate at the optimal capacity of the bus.
