Camp in Pune

Camp is a locality in Pune that the Pune elite society swear by. Known as an area for the snobbish, Camp, according to most Puneites, is the locality where all the happening stuff is. The Camp area in Pune is all about finesse and being classy.

In 1918, Camp or Pune Cantonment which is a military cantonment was established for the use of British Indian Army in the centre of Pune. The headquarters of the Indian Army’s Southern Command is also located here. At the centre of Camp lies Bund Garden, which is also Pune's largest green cover. A large number of corporate offices, business and commercial centres and upscale shopping malls like the SGS Mall are located here. The Camp area is probably the most happening locality in the city of Pune, bustling with hundreds of people teeming here to shop or eat or simply just look around. Commuting to and within camp is fairly easy. Buses and rickshaws travel to and fro frequently connecting Camp to the other parts of Pune, however, driving cars here is easier as compared to the other parts of Pune due to better roads.

M.G. Road and East Street are famous for their shopping locations are also in this area. Fashion in Pune can’t get better than Camp. With stores like Wonderland, which is a popular and trendy shopping centre for apparel, it also has Fashion Street where you can indulge in inexpensive shopping on the road and pick up something good if it catches your fancy. One can also find a number of premium brand stores on M.G Road Adidas and Nike. Stores line either sides of the road here. Then of course there is the SGS Mall offering the best of premium and high-end local and international brands.

Food in Camp


In Camp, are also located many eateries that are fairly popular Kayani Bakerylike the quaint Kayani Bakery which is extremely well known for their deliciously mouth-watering sponge cake or better known as mawa cake and their crunchy Shrewsbury biscuits and TOONS which is a well-known pub amongst the youth known for their cheap beer and affordable food. The two most popular burger joints in the city of Pune, King Burger and Jaws are also located in this area. Other cuisines include Chinese served at Chinese Room and Eddie’s Kitchen, Continental served at The Place, Indian food at Mirchi Kola and a number of other joints like the ever crowded Marz-o-rin café for its great sandwiches, rolls and fresh juices at student friendly prices complete this list of restaurants offering excellent cuisines.

Great wada pavs, fast food, vegetarian restaurants, pubs, cafes and lounges are spread across Camp. Mahesh lunch home is an extremely well-known restaurant for sea food lovers where one can devour coastal food. There is also a hip restaurants called Thousand Oaks near Camp, popular with the youth. For vegetarians there is a great option available in the same area called Ramkrishna Restaurant which is an ideal place to enjoy popular vegetarian fare like chaats along with kulfi faloodas for dessert. There are also a number of Irani cafés dotting the Camp area most known for their ‘bun maska and chai’. Stores like Manney’s Bookstore and The Sound of Music, Cassettes and CD’s have one of the finest collections for books, CD's, DVD's and even cassettes and records for the music lovers in Pune. Discos and Pubs also dot this area and the nightlife in Camp is very happening.

Culture and Society in the Camp Area


Cantonment General Hospital, which contains 100 beds, is located on Solapur Road. In addition to this, the hospital also runs three dispensaries. Private hospitals like Ruby Hall Clinic which is one of the foremost hospitals in the city and the Jehangir Hospital are also located here. Camp also is home to a state-run hospital called Sassoon Hospital.

St. Mary’s church, located in Camp is the oldest standing church structure in this region of the country. It is popularly called the ‘Mother Church of the Deccan’. This church building has since its consecration been a place of worship for people from different walks of life and is widely considered to be a historic landmark.

Camp is truly the amalgamation of the old heritage of Pune and the new outlook that the surge of immigrants and students have brought in. With liberal attitudes and an open mind, Camp combines good food, culture and entertainment to be one of the best localities in Pune.
