Pune Airport
Pune offers excellent air connectivity to all the major metro cities of India through domestic airlines like Indian Airlines, Spice Jet, Jet Airways, IndiGo and many more. However, the availability and frequency of direct international flights to and from Pune is minimal. In fact, currently it is limited to only two cities: Dubai and Frankfurt. It was believed that soon the travelers would be able to fly between Pune and Singapore by the end of 2013 but this is still in the proposal stage and nothing has been confirmed by Airport Authority of India (AAI). As of now, Mumbai is the nearest international airport which links Pune to other cities in the world.
Lohegaon Airport
Pune Airport, also known as Lohegaon Airport, located about 10 kms from the main city is managed and controlled by AAI. All the domestic and international flights are operated from the civil area of Lohegaon Air Base of Indian Air Force (IAF).
At present, the passenger movement at Lohegaon airport is estimated more than 2.8 million. However with only 8 parking bays and limited international traffic handling capacity, the airport is not able to meet the existing demand of air traffic to and from Pune.
Since Pune is emerging as a prominent place for IT, education, automobile, health and cultural events, it has become imperative that this airport is able to sustain the needs of both domestic and international passengers. Moreover, the civil public is not able to access the airport when it is closed every day for few hours by IAF to carry out its military functions.
Consequently, AAI launched a modernization project for Lohegaon Airport in 2008, under which new terminals were constructed and additional facilities were commissioned for the passengers. AAI has also proposed a major expansion plan for the current airport to handle cargo aircraft as well as civil passenger traffic at par with other international airports.

New Pune International Airport
As stated above, since Lohegaon airport is not operating fully to its expected air capacity, the state government of Maharashtra has proposed the construction of a new airport in Pune which will efficiently handle international passenger and cargo air traffic. The construction of new international airport has received clearance from AAI and its development will be now the responsibility of Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). Estimated to be a 1,000 crore project, the airport is scheduled to go under construction by 2015. This airport location is proposed at Rajgurunugar (about 40 kms north of Pune) and expected to connect Pune and western Maharashtra to all the global cities.
