Pune Administrative Set Up : An Overview

The Indian Administrative set up is a three tier set up flowing from upward to downward i.e., from central to state government and from state government to local government. The local administrative set up is again divided to cities and villages in urban areas the administrative set up is under the observation of Municipal Corporation and in rural areas it is under the control of Panchayati Raj Institutions.

The local administration of Pune lies under the control of Pune Municipal Corporation. Established on February 15, 1950, the Pune Municipal Corporation is headed by the Municipal Commissioner who is an IAS Officer, appointed by the government of Maharashtra. Apart from him there is Municipal Board which is represented by the Mayor and the different members representing the various wards. The total number of members in Pune Municipal Corporation is 144.

The major responsibility of PMC is to look after the civic and infrastructural needs of the citizens of the Pune.  The city of Pune is divided into fourty eight municipal wards represented by 3 members from each ward, the local administration of wards is mainly administered by an Assistant Municipal Commissioner. The members of the different wards are elected by the people through Municipal Elections which are held at regular intervals and in which local members of all major political parties participate.

At present the Shri. Mohansingh Rajpal of National Congress Party is the Mayor of PMC, where as Shri. Mahesh Zagde is the current Commissioner.Pune Municipal Corporation is also known as Pune Maha Nagar Palika. With an objective of providing better services to the citizens of Pune, PMC has introduced the services of e-Governance to reach the masses instantly.

The city of Pune comes under the Haveli Taluka of the District of Pune in Maharashtra and the revenue generated from this is collected by the office of collector appointed by the Government of India. The collectors are also assigned the responsibility of maintaining the property records of the city and organizing the national elections here. The law and order in the city is look after by the Police Department which is headed by the Police Commissioner who is an IPS Officer. The department of Police is an integral part of state Home Ministry.
